HUGE new Library updates: Sport by Sport revenue rankings, D-II data, and more

It's been a few weeks since our last dispatch. But we've been busy!

Good morning, and welcome back to the Library Card.

Normally, I don’t like going so long between dispatches. But we have some big updates to share, and we wanted to put them all in one place.

Introducing Sport by Sport benchmarking data

One bit of feedback we get a lot, especially from athletic department personnel, is that they don’t just want the raw PDFs of the MFRS reports or various contracts…they want to quickly extract info from those PDFs to make better decisions.

We’re working on that! One tool that we think will help is the new ability to sort and compare individual line items in the MFRS reports by sport.

Here’s an example. Let’s say I wanted to know which men’s soccer programs reported the most ticket revenue in FY24. You could download 140+ FRS reports, check for the ticket revenue line item for men’s soccer, and make a table. I’ve done this before. It takes a long time.

OR, you could pull up the Extra Points Library, → Finances Tab → By Sport, and then pull a table.

Pretty useful! You can already rank entire athletic departments by line item (revenue or expenses), but now, you can get even more granular and sort by sport.

We’re looking into the best technical ways to produce similar tables for coach, AD and vendor contracts. That’s a bit trickier, since those contracts aren’t standardized like MFRS Budget Reports are, but we think it’s doable! But for now, we hope this financial table tool will be useful. I’ll certainly be using it for more storytelling over at Extra Points.

Quality Of Live Improvements are coming

I use the Extra Points Library just about every day, either because I’m uploading new documents, testing new features, or using the information for my writing over at Extra Points. But you don’t have to be in the Library every dang day to notice that sometimes….well…it can be a little slow.

It isn’t your computer! We’ve noticed that as our library has grown well beyond 7,000 total documents, our existing infrastructure was struggling to support our search tools.

We’ve now moved databases. If you haven’t logged into the Library in a minute, you should notice a faster, more fluid experience. We also believe that the new database and backend will allow us to continue to add new features and documents without compromising your user experience.

We also have plenty of new documents to inspect!

We continued to file requests on a rolling basis during June and July, but two of our bigger priorities were to a) improve the depth of document offerings we had for D-II institutions and b) improve the depth of document offerings we had for the ticketing industry.

We’re now close to 800 documents in D-II, which is close to double what we had a few months ago. Those include lots of apparel contracts, ticketing industry contracts, head coach contracts, MFRS reports, and much more. Anybody interested in benchmarking data for D-II should be able to find much of what they need today, and we’re adding more stuff every week.

We’re at roughly 7,000 documents for D-I, with new contracts for ticketing services accounting for much of that growth. But we also have several new women’s basketball coach contracts, new multimedia rights deals, international travel contracts (such as with travel agencies, international marketing firms, etc), lacrosse coaches, and more.

What’s next?

Our product roadmap is fluid, but there are a few things I’m actively looking for at the moment

  • Salary benchmarking data for new administrative hires. We have some school-based partners that would like information on non-contract employees, like athletic trainers, communication professionals, CFOs, etc. We’re looking at how we can best collect and share this information so individuals and teams can hire, and negotiate, with confidence.

  • More current MMR and secondary marketing contracts. The MMR world is likely to significantly change in a post-House era, and we want to make sure the Library has the most current information to reflect that.

  • Game contracts (with a focus on FB, MBB and WBB).

Something else you’d like to see? Features that we don’t currently have? Drop me a line at Matt @ ExtrapointsMB.com. We want to make this the most useful tool possible for you.

Thanks for reading. We’ll see you soon!
